About Me

Pauline Higham

Professional Work and Experience

I am a qualified Jungian Analytical Psychotherapist and trained with the West Midlands Institute of Psychotherapy, of which I am a Professional Member. I am also a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I was a Registered Mental Health Nurse and Specialist Practitioner in mental health. As a nurse I became very interested in the psychodynamics of relationship, how self-destructive patterns can develop out of trauma and the possibilities for transformation that can occur by using the professional therapeutic alliance.

I am particularly interested in the effects of early relational trauma and as such I undertook a two-year infant observation, part of an Infant Observation course.

I used my MSc in Advanced Nursing Practice to further develop my understanding of the life changing and life enhancing possibilities in the therapeutic relationship. Prior to this I had acquired a BSc (Hons) in Health Care Practice and undertook courses in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and group analysis.

I have more than 25 years’ experience working in the NHS in the field of mental health and mental wellbeing. I spent many years working in senior nursing positions at inpatient ward level, working to bring about change. I have also worked in the community as a mental health nurse working with people with complex mental health difficulties. In addition, I have worked as a psychotherapist within the NHS.

Overall my passion is to understand and work with the whole of life experience which brings me to the work of C.G. Jung and my training as an Analytical Psychotherapist. Jungian Psychotherapy seeks to include an understanding, exploration and articulation of the full range of one’s experience, and, as such, with the support of the therapeutic relationship, possibilities for healthy change can occur.

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.
